Prior to attending dental school, Dr.Richard J. Lee received a Master's of Science in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at The George Washington University in Washington, DC. For two years, he worked as a research scientist at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Cancer Institute (NCI) focusing on a cure for breast cancer.
During his years as a researcher, Dr. Lee acquired a Master's of Public Health in Epidemiology and Biostatistics, also from GWU. From 1996 to 1999, he worked on projects at the World Health Organization (WHO), the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). His projects involved developing policies on cancer detection and awareness.
Although Dr. Lee enjoyed his work, he felt that his job left him with little interaction with people. Since his father was a reputable physician in the Northern Virginia area (Annandale Family Practice), Dr. Lee was able to observe the wonderful patient-doctor bond his dad had with patients. Since Dr. Lee also enjoys working with his hands, he felt dentistry would be the perfect choice for his career.
In 1999, Dr. Lee was accepted to the prestigious Ivy-League School, University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. He graduated in 2003 and placed in the top 10% of his class.
After receiving his Doctorate of Dental Medicine, he worked as a cosmetic dentist in the "Riviera of America" (Miami Beach, Florida)., where he focused on creating beautiful smiles. He did aesthetic procedures such as laser teeth whitening, full anterior veneers, and full-mouth reconstructions. Dr. Lee practiced for a few years in Miami before he returned back to school to start his orthodontic residency. He chose orthodontics as his dental specialty because it follows his passion in developing beautiful, natural smiles.
Dr. Lee is currently providing the best orthodontic care for children and adults to areas of Northern Virginia and Maryland. He is active in the community and is dedicated to supporting education. He attends study clubs and lectures to local elementary, middle, and high school students about the importance of orthodontic treatment. He is also an active sponsor to local schools and teams.
Dr. Lee grew up in the Northern Virginia area attending Langley High School prior to going to Syracuse University for college. He has found that the Washington, DC metropolitan area has many things to offer as far as culture and fine dining. He enjoys the Kennedy Center and Wolf Trap to watch various shows and concerts. He loves the relaxation and salt-life Southern Maryland offers.
